Passage

Piano

BY D. H. LAWRENCE

Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;

Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see

A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings

And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.

Despite myself, the insidious mastery of song

Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong

To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside

And hymns in the cozy parlor, the tinkling piano our guide.

So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamor

With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour

Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast

Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.

What are the poet՚s reminiscences about his childhood days? (Mark 25)

Explanation

It is a fine evening time. The sun is about to set. A woman is singing a song. The sweet song takes the poet back to his childhood days. He remembers how he enjoyed his life. He sees his mother playing the piano. He is sitting under the piano near his mother՚s feet and touching it with his fingers. She smiles at him as she sings. He thinks about the Sunday evenings at home. During those days he used to listen to songs sitting in the parlor. His mind is flooded with childhood memories. He works like a child for the lost childhood days.
