Passage

Piano

BY D. H. LAWRENCE

Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;

Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see

A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings

And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.

Despite myself, the insidious mastery of song

Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong

To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside

And hymns in the cozy parlor, the tinkling piano our guide.

So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamor

With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour

Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast

Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.

What is the attitude of the poet in the poem? (Mark 25)

Explanation

While reading the poem we also connected with the authors. We also are desirous to “weep like a child for the past.” The smallest remembrance or memory can submerge us in a pond of sweet memories and days later, we are still feeling the same. Music has such an influential effect on us. The brain can connect the songs as memories or even smells and places of interest. Hearing a song that we heard long ago, can wobble, bring out of old memories, and open a “flood of remembrance.” Here the poet longs for the past. He wants to regain the old life in which the pleasant of mother՚s love held. But he knew that it is not possible. So, he expresses his sadness through this poetic line. So, the poet is in sad mode of tone in the poem.
