Passage

Ramayya lived in the town with his wife. He was not rich but he could care of his family. Two sparrows built a nest in the roof of his house and the mother-bird laid her eggs in it. The male bird said that Ramayya wife was quarrelsome. He added that they should help poor Ramayya. The female bird advised her husband to mind his own business and to see that the cat did not come near their nest.

The male bird saw a diamond nose-jewel in the muck-heap. He picked up the jewel and brought it to his wife. The female bird said that it was useless to her and advised her husband to go out and find some grub as the young ones were hungry. The male bird dropped the nose-stud on the floor and flew away in search of food.

Ramayya wife saw the diamond nose-jewel lying on the floor. She picked it up and wore it. Ramayya advised her to hand over the jewel to the village magistrate. But his wife did not heed his advice. In the house of Meenakshi Ammal, they were searching for the missing jewel. The servant maid Kuppayi was suspected of stealing it. The police searched her house and found nothing.

Ramayya was filled with fear. His wife put the stud away in her box.

Soon she had a fever and she had to be confined to the bed. The she sparrow observed that the fever might be the end of her. She rebuked her husband for bringing the nose-jewel and tempting the woman. She said that they should not be greedy for what belonged to others. Ramayya wife still had the diamond nose-jewel with her. But her fear of getting caught was more than the pride of having a diamond jewel.
