Web Search Engines face a number of difficult problems in maintaining and enhancing the quality of performance.

The various problems faced are:

i) Spam: Presence of web spam mislead search engines into mis-leading users to certain

Websites. It becomes difficult for a user to find information they need leading to an increased cost per query. These web spams have increased over the years due to increasing importance of search engines to commercial web sites.

ii) Content Quality: The content quality gets affected due to full noisy, low quality, unreliable and contradictory content. Due to a huge size of the web it has become very difficult to judge and nurture the document quality that is very important for generating good search results.

iii) Duplicate Hosts: These are the duplicate pages present on the web. A duplicate page is the single largest source of duplicate pages on the web. Although efforts are being put to sort out these duplicate hosts problems to ensure efficient functioning of the search engine but still a lot needs to be done.
