Differentiate positive symptoms from negative symptoms of schizophrenia (Marks 5)

Explanation

Differentiate between positive and negative symptoms of Schizophrenia are as follows

  • Positive symptoms of schizophrenia are the most obvious signs of psychosis. These includes disturbing experiences of delusions and hallucinations. Approximately 70 % of people with schizophrenia display these symptoms

  • Misinterpretation of reality is called as delusions. A common delusion in people with schizophrenia is the others are “out to get them” called as delusions of persecution

  • Experience of sensory events without any input from the surrounding environment is called as hallucinations

  • Negative symptoms usually indicate the absence or insufficiency of normal behavior. These include apathy, emotional and social with drawl and approximately 25 % of people with schizophrenia display these symptoms approximately 25 % of people with schizophrenia display these symptoms
