Explain- ‘Swami Vivekananda՚s view on women education’ .


  • Swami Vivekananda is a world renowned personality, who represents Hinduism. He is a very popular social reformer with spiritual wisdom and known for his inspirational speeches as well.
  • Swami Vivekananda stood up for the equality of men and women. Swami Vivekananda is worked tirelessly for the freedom and equality of women.
  • According to Swami Vivekananda, one of the major obstacles for the progress of society is the lack of education among women. The condition of women during Swami Vivekananda՚s time was very pathetic and had no education rights as well. That is why he always used to say that where the women live in sadness and no estimation, there is no hope of rise for that country. He recognized that- “the women should be put in positions of power to solve their problems in their own way” .
  • As per Swami Vivekananda- “To make a beginning in women՚s education, our Hindu women easily understand what chastity means, because it is their heritage” .
  • He put the mother Sita as an ideal woman, who never deviates from the performing of her own duties; despite worsen situations in the life. He opposed the interference of men in women education and urged them to let women get empowered in their own unique way.
  • He opposed the early marriage of women, which leads to the increasing number of widows and early child birth. This may increase the higher risk of poverty too.
  • Swami Vivekananda identified a ‘different curriculum’ for the women due to their special status in the society. And he urges everybody to teach women in mother tongue and said that- this will be the best medium for the social as well as mass education among women. His educational perspective was not only based upon applied Vedanta but on the western culture too.
  • As per his view- treatment of women is the thermometer of the progress of nation. The condition of women must be improved for the welfare of the world.
